What types of eye care professionals are there?

There are three types of eye care professionals — an ophthalmologist (MD), optometrist (OD) and optician. Find out their roles and how they contribute to your eye health and vision care.

Ophthalmologist

This can be a Medical Doctor (MD) or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) who treats complex medical and surgical eye problems often by sub-specialty.

Optometrist

This is a Doctor of Optometry (OD) who manages and treats various eye conditions, conducts comprehensive eye exams and fits contact lenses.

Optician

This licensed professional provides vision correction by fulfilling prescriptions for glasses or contact lenses written by optometrists or ophthalmologists.
