Top FAQs

How old do I have to be to wear contact lenses?

The average age people usually get contact lenses is 13, but it has been shown that some younger children are responsible enough to wear and maintain contact lenses. Successful lens wear depends more on responsibility and attitude than age. We recommend you contact your Eye Care Professional to determine if your child is a good candidate for contact lenses.

Will contact lenses melt in my eyes?
Ever heard of contact lenses melting over a barbeque? Don’t worry, this is false. The lens material can only decompose at temperatures much higher than the boiling point of water.
Can contact lenses get lost behind my eyes?
Not a chance. In fact, it’s physically impossible. A membrane covers your eye and connects to the inside of your eyelids, so there’s no chance your contact lens will slide behind your eyes.
Can contact lenses get glued to my eyes?
Not likely. Contact lenses can be easily removed using the method your Eye Care Professional recommended. All it takes is practice and patience.
Can contact lenses pop out of my eye?
Not likely. With proper fitting, contact lenses should stay in place almost all the time. Even on that rare occasion when a contact lens moves out of place, it usually stays in your eye until you move it back.
Can contact lenses scratch your eye?
Such contact lens-related problems can occur, but they’re unlikely. Most common eye health issues are caused by poorly fitted lenses, or by not taking care of the lenses like you should. If you do experience any unusual eye discomfort or changes in your vision, remove your lenses and call your Eye Care Professional immediately.

Contact Lenses

Contact Lenses

Why do I need a prescription for contact lenses?

Contact lenses are classified as medical devices in Singapore and are required to be prescribed and dispensed by registered optometrists or contact lens practitioners. Only an Eye Care Professional can properly measure your need for vision correction as well as determine which size and type of contact lens is best for you. Plus, changes that can occur to your vision and eye health over time can only be detected with specialised equipment and procedures.

Is my contact lens prescription different than my eyeglass prescription?

Yes. A prescription for contact lenses requires different information than a prescription for eyeglasses. Along with the level of vision correction, a contact lens prescription will include the base curve which is used to fit the curvature of the lens to your eye and the diameter which is used to fit the width of the lens to your eye. Schedule an eye exam with your Eye Care Professional to assess your eye health and current contact lens prescription.

How do I get a contact lens prescription?

Start by scheduling a contact lens appointment with an Eye Care Professional. As your first contact lens fitting takes a little longer than a regular eye exam, be sure to inform that you want a contact lens fitting. Want to find an Eye Care Professional near you who carries ACUVUE®?

Do contact lenses expire?

Yes, contact lenses do expire, and it is strictly not advised to wear them after the expiration date. It is important to purchase your lenses from ACUVUE® authorised practitioners to ensure your lenses are the freshest batch. You may refer to the ‘Use-by-Date’ on the lens package, which indicates the date after which the lenses are not to be used.

Will a lower power lens help stabilise my vision?

For optimum clear vision, you should always stick to the power prescription provided by your Eye Care Professional. Although your vision may seem stabilised as an adult, without proper eye care and consistent eye examinations, your power may change over time.

What is a base curve?

The base curve is the back curvature of a contact lens. It’s used to determine the curvature of the lens to your eye to provide the best fit and comfort. The lower the number, the steeper the curve of the lens.

What is diameter?

Diameter is the distance across the surface of your lens, from edge to edge. Your Eye Care Professional will determine the correct diameter for you during your exam.

Wear & Care

Wear & Care

Is it difficult to take care of contact lenses?

Advances in technology make contact lenses convenient and easy to use. Maintaining and caring for your reusable bi-weekly lenses is easy with multipurpose lens solutions that make cleaning, disinfecting and storing contact lenses simple and convenient. For the most convenient way to wear contact lenses, consider daily contact lenses. Just wear them for the day, then throw them away.

Can I continue using my glasses if I start wearing contact lenses?

Of course. You can wear both contact lenses and glasses, alternating for specific activities, needs, or preference. However, contact lenses can be used full-time. The choice is up to you and your Eye Care Professional.

I don’t need glasses all the time. Why should I wear contact lenses?

If you do not need vision correction often, contact lenses are an easy, always-there alternative to wear when you need them for certain activities, such as sports. Unlike glasses, contact lenses won’t smudge, steam up, fall off or break. Plus, you will get a complete field of clear vision that won’t be obstructed by frames.

Can I wear contacts while participating in sports or recreational activities?

Bring it on. Contact lenses offer clear vision and you won’t have to worry about them fogging up, falling off or breaking during a game like glasses can. Plus, you won’t experience a loss of peripheral vision like you can with glasses.

Are eye infections common when wearing contact lenses?

Contact lens-related health problems can occur, but they’re rare. Infections are most commonly related to poor cleaning routines or other lens care-related issues. If you follow your Eye Care Professional’s directions for proper wear and care, you should be fine. For a more hygienic and hassle-free option, you may like to consider daily contact lenses.

Are coloured contacts bad for eyes?

It’s important to find beauty lenses that do not compromise on health and safety. One of the most common problems is that many coloured contact lenses leave your eyeballs in direct contact with its pigments. With friction, these pigments may rub off onto your eyes, causing irritation and other eye health complications. Learn how ACUVUE® DEFINE® uses BEAUTY WRAPPED IN COMFORT Technology to prevent pigments from coming in contact with your eyes.

What’s the difference between daily disposable and bi-weekly reusable lenses?

Daily Disposable contact lenses are used for one day, then thrown away. They typically don’t involve the use of lens solutions and contact lens cases. You may want to consider daily lenses for travelling or if you simply want a more hygienic and hassle-free option.

Bi-weekly Reusable lenses are reused for two weeks and require cleaning and disinfection every day. Some lenses are approved for even longer wearing periods. However, a shorter wear cycle and more frequent use of fresh lenses, is more comfortable.

What’s the difference between toric and astigmatism contact lenses?

They’re the same thing. Toric lenses specifically correct for astigmatism.

What’s the difference between bifocal and multifocal contact lenses?

In general, bifocal contact lenses are designed with only two zones of vision (near and far) in the same lens. Multifocal contact lenses are designed with more than two zones of vision (near, far and in-between) in each lens.

What is hydrogel?

Hydrogel is a soft, water-holding polymer plastic used to make contact lenses.

What is a silicone hydrogel?

A silicone hydrogel is the newest generation of soft contact lenses.

What does Dk and Dk/t mean?

Dk, or oxygen permeability, is the rate that oxygen can flow through a contact lens material. Dk/t or oxygen transmissibility, determines how much oxygen gets through a lens of a particular thickness.

Eye Health Conditions

Eye Health Conditions

Can contact lenses damage my eyes?

Contact lenses are safe to wear, always follow your eye care practitioner instructions in wear and care of your lenses.

I’ve been told I have astigmatism. Can I still wear contact lenses?

Yes. Astigmatism is no longer a barrier to wearing contact lenses. ACUVUE® astigmatism lenses offer people with astigmatism exceptional fit, comfort and visual clarity.

Can I wear contact lenses if I’ve had cataract surgery?

Maybe. Only your Eye Care Professional can tell for certain. If your Eye Care Professional feels that contact lenses are still an option, we believe that ACUVUE® is an excellent choice.

If I’ve had LASIK or another refractive surgery, can I still wear contact lenses?

This depends on the recommendation of your Eye Care Professional. LASIK surgery permanently alters the shape of your eye, but doesn’t prevent the development of presbyopia, so you’ll still need vision correction at some point.

If your Eye Care Professional feels that contact lenses are still an option, we believe that ACUVUE® is an excellent choice! Some have considered beauty lenses with no power to enhance their natural eye beauty.

How do allergies affect contact lenses?

Airborne allergens such as pollen can build up on your lenses, causing discomfort. To help improve comfort, consider 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST.

Do my eyes need a rest from contacts to “breathe”?

Generally, no. Unless your Eye Care Professional has instructed you otherwise, you can safely wear your lenses every day.

Cost Conditions

Cost Conditions

Are contact lenses more expensive than glasses?

Contact lenses can be surprisingly affordable. In fact, replacing a lost contact lens can be cheaper and easier as compared to replacing lost or damaged glasses.

You may consider cost-saving options available on MyACUVUE® Member Program.

Foil and Packaging Materials

Foil and Packaging Materials

What changes have been made to the packaging?

Please refer to the images below for reference. The packaging now features noticeable color changes on the blister foil and minor labeling adjustments on the carton. Specifically, ACUVUE® Astigmatism brands now include an orange astigmatism indication banner, while ACUVUE® Multifocal brands feature a yellow multifocal indication banner.

1-Day Moist

1-Day Moist Multifocal

Oasys with Hydraclear

Vita
Do the new packaging designs contain the same contact lenses and solution as the previous ones?

The new packaging reflects a mandatory regulatory compliance regulation and rebranding effort by Johnson & Johnson. The lenses inside remain the same high-quality products as we follow the same manufacturer's protocols. Although users may perceive differences due to the placebo effect with the new packaging, rest assured that the contact lenses and packing solution themselves remain unchanged.

Will the new packaging affect the quality or safety of the contact lenses?

While the packaging may appear different, we want to assure you that there were no changes made to the contact lens or packing solution. Our manufacturing processes, locations and contact lens products continue to remain the same.

Will the size of packaging or blister change?

No, both the package and blister size remain unchanged.

Why were these packaging changes made?

These changes were made to reflect European Union (EU) mandatory labeling requirements and include the additional information needed by various countries in our labeling. We took this opportunity to also refine the cosmetic appearance of our packaging to ease product recognition for our valued customers and patients.

Why was the ® trademark symbol removed from the names “Moist” and “Oasys”?

A ® can only be used in countries where we have a trademark registration. So, even where we have cleared, and approved use of a brand, and even where there may be a pending trademark application, the ® cannot be used. Therefore, in order to avoid the potential of improper use of a ® if packaging or other assets are used in a market whether ACUVUE MOIST is not registered, only mark ACUVUE, e.g. ACUVUE® MOIST or ACUVUE® OASYS.

Are there any differences in the products from different facilities?

No. All our contact lenses are either made in Jacksonville, Florida, USA or Limerick, Ireland. The Jacksonville facility manufactures the vast majority of all US distributed lenses. Products from these two facilities maintain consistent quality. Whether manufactured in Jacksonville, or Ireland, our rigorous quality control protocols ensure uniformity. All products meet the same high standards, regardless of their origin.

Can I continue to use lenses with the old packaging design until the expiration date on the packaging?

Yes, absolutely. The expiration date on the packaging indicates the lens's shelf life, regardless of packaging design. Feel free to use your old inventory until its expiration date with confidence.

Do different blister foil colors indicate different expiration dates?

No, the color of the blister foil does not correlate with expiration dates. Different contact lens families may have distinct foil colors for easy identification, but expiration dates are clearly marked on each package for clarity.

Which contact lens family corresponds to each blister foil color?

1-DAY ACUVUE MOIST family: Blue

1-DAY ACUVUE Define®: Gray

OASYS 1-DAY with HydraLuxe® and OASYS 2-Week families: Teal

Vita family: Purple

How to easily distinguish between ACUVUE® astigmatism and multifocal contact lenses?

ACUVUE® Astigmatism brand with new packaging features an orange indication banner on both the blister foil and carton, while ACUVUE® Multifocal brand displays a yellow indication banner. This was an opportunity to provide consistency with the color across our portfolio.

Will the pricing of the contact lenses change due to the new packaging?

There are no changes to the pricing of the contact lenses as a result of the packaging update. Our pricing remains competitive and reflects the value of our products.

Are there any special storage instructions for the new packaging?

While there are no significant changes to the storage requirements, we recommend storing the contact lenses in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Will there be any changes to the packaging design in the future?

As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we may periodically update the packaging design to enhance usability, aesthetics, or sustainability. Any future changes will be communicated to our customers in advance.
