Protect your eyes from sun damage with UV protection contact lenses

Though damage to the skin from ultraviolet (UV) rays is more well known, your eyes are just as vulnerable to UV radiation. That's why ACUVUE® includes UV blocking in every lens.**^2

ACUVUE[^®] contact lens product range.

Built in ultra violet protection for your eyes**^1

ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses are the only major brand which block more than 98% UVB and 85% UVA rays as standard.#2

Unlike sun protection for the skin, the UV-blocking ingredient in ACUVUE® contact lenses is incorporated into the material permanently**^1 - it won't wear off. It's important to remember that sunglasses are still an essential part of protecting your eyes from UV. Since both provide partial protection, ACUVUE® contact lenses and sunglasses are intended to go hand-in-hand. We also suggest the use of a brimmed hat.

Why is UV protection important for your eyes?

  • UV radiation can't be felt so it is particularly important to always protect your eyes.
  • Anytime you're outside, you're exposed to UV radiation.

Shining a light on UV myths

Myth: Sun protection for your eyes isn't needed on cloudy and overcast days

During the day, solar radiation is always present. Even on cloudy days, the sun can harm the eyes.

Myth: You only have to worry about UV coming directly from the sun

Up to 80% of UV's power reflects off snow. And even at half a meter under water, UV rays are still 40% as intense as on the surface.

Myth: A hat alone will protect my eyes from UV rays

Hats or caps with brims can reduce eye exposure to UV rays, but full eye protection requires the use of wraparound sunglasses, too.

Footnotes

**Helps protect against transmission of harmful UV radiation to the cornea and into the eye.

^WARNING: UV-absorbing contact lenses are NOT substitutes for protective UV-absorbing eyewear such as UV- absorbing goggles or sunglasses because they do not completely cover the eye and surrounding area. You should continue to use UV-absorbing eyewear as directed.

NOTE: Long-term exposure to UV radiation is one of the risk factors associated with cataracts. Exposure is based on a number of factors such as environmental conditions (altitude, geography, cloud cover) and personal factors (extent and nature of outdoor activities). UV- blocking contact lenses help provide protection against harmful UV radiation. However, clinical studies have not been done to demonstrate that wearing UV-blocking contact lenses reduces the risk of developing cataracts or other eye disorders. Consult your eye care practitioner for more information.
